A mai liberális-demokrata-haladó irányzatok szellemi és ideológiai háttérként általában a francia forradalmat jelölik meg; ez a legfontosabb esemény a modern haladás történetében, és haladó kollégáink szerint mai szabadságunkat leginkább ennek az eseménynek köszönhetjük.
Hogy mit is takar ez? De Sade materialista szadizmusától kezdve Robespierre-ék felszabadító forradalmi terrorjáig sok mindent. De hogy adjunk egy kis ízelítőt a haladó szabadság-értelmezésből, álljon itt de Lamballe hercegnő rabigája alól való felszabadulás – szabadság, forradalmi-haladó módra:
